Stephen Chow appointed political advisor in China
GUANGDONG, China: Hong Kong actor Stephen Chow has been appointed a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Guangdong Province on Monday, reported Chinese media.
The "Kung Fu Hustle" star's manager told Chinese media on Wednesday that Chow has always been "very interested in politics" and feels "honoured" to become a member of the political advisory body.
"In the eyes of some members of the audience, Stephen Chow is only an actor or a director, but he actually pays a lot of attention to issues outside the film industry," said Chow's manager.
Chow's manager added that the 50-year-old star will focus on his CPPCC duties once he concludes the promotional activities for his new film "Journey to the West", which also stars Show Luo and Shu Qi.
Chow's appointment has raised questions over whether it is wise to appoint busy celebrities, who may not have the time or the inclination to participate in the CPPCC's activities.
However, the Guangdong Province CPPCC has since pointed out that inactive members may be expelled or asked to resign.
Chow is not the first celebrity to have been appointed a political advisor in China.
Chinese stars like Gong Li and director Zhang Yimou have also been members of the CPPCC at the national level in the past.
