The software had originally been rated as suitable for 12-year-olds, but after
a storm of
protests over pornographic footage, including one clip that was
‘Editor’s choice’, the rating has been changed.
The new service is designed to encourage Twitter members to share clips
recorded on their smartphones "in a simple and fun way for your friends and
family to see". Widely dubbed “Instagram for video”, it extends Twitter’s
140-character ethos to video, with clips limited to just six seconds.
Changes have also recently been made to the ratings of blogging service Tumblr
and photo-sharing service 500px, which had a 'Nude' category despite Apple's
ban on pornography.
Vine does not vet material before it is posted but it has now also deleted
some accounts. Commentators have noted that pornography is easily
accessible via related hashtags.
The 500px app was originally removed from the App Store "for featuring
pornographic images and material [in] a clear violation of our guidelines".
It has since been reinstated with a warning.
